Manuel R. Guariguata is an ecologist interested in the management of multiple goods and services of both natural and restored forests, mainly from a biophysical perspective but also considering regulatory and normative aspects. He received his M.Sc. from the University of Florida and his doctorate from Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. Up until 2022, he was Principal Scientist at the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR). Before joining CIFOR he was a forest scientist at the Tropical Agricultural Research and Education Center (CATIE) in Costa Rica. There, he also taught in its Graduate Program. As Environmental Affairs Officer at the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, he facilitated intergovernmental deliberations on forest biodiversity and climate change.
